NOVEMBER CHECK-IN
Monthly community service hours completed: 8
Cumulative semester service hours completed: 12
In November, I had the chance to volunteer at two new events that were both rewarding and enjoyable. First, I joined the Tulane Brain Institute at the American Heart Association Heart Walk, where we hosted a community outreach booth, organized by professor Solch-Ottaiano. A few classmates and I were able to teach visitors about brain anatomy and stroke awareness. Many participants had personal or family histories of cardiovascular disease, and after completing our modules on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, it was meaningful to finally put that knowledge to use. For the children, we made pipe-cleaner neurons and brain hats, which were surprisingly engaging and sparked genuine excitement about learning how the body works. Seeing how much the community valued this outreach made me excited to continue volunteering with the organization next semester.
I also volunteered at the Common Ground Relief Free Pantry, which was a nice contrast to the work I did with Grace at the Green Light last month. The organization receives donations from local businesses and provides a completely free “grocery store” for those in need. I helped distribute fresh bakery goods from a local shop, and it was clear how important this service is to the community. Located in the Lower Ninth Ward, the pantry is still relatively small, but everyone involved was incredibly passionate. I was grateful for the chance to help and to experience a part of New Orleans I hadn’t yet seen.
All in all, I had a very eye-opening and enriching experience volunteering this semester. Next semester, I plan to continue exploring new organizations and deepening my understanding of what it truly means to be part of the New Orleans community. I’m quickly falling in love with this city, everyone is so welcoming and close-knit, and these volunteer experiences have helped me appreciate the culture in a more personal way. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had so far and excited to continue giving back in the months ahead!
